firefit2The Chilliwack River Valley is hosting SCOTT Firefit, a fire fighter relay challenge with different tests of strength and abilities, things like climbing a tower in full gear or forcing entry through a door.

Chilliwack River Valley fire chief Mike Danyluk is helping organize the event and says as grueling as the competition is, it pretty much mimics the standards fire fighters have to live up to.

“Obviously we have to be in good physical condition to perform the different aspects of the job, so this literally puts you to the test in any kind of situaiton that you might face as a firefighter.”

Danyluk says although it’s a competition, it’s also a way to inspire fire fighters to be at the top of their game.

“It is for sure for bragging rights, and it’s something to be very proud of. The guys are always talking about their best time. But I think it just directly compares to what’s required for the job so if you can do this, you’re definitely capable of handling what the job can throw at you.”

Spectators are welcome to come watch at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club Saturday and Sunday.
