Quick actions from resident limits damage from kitchen fire

On September 19th at approximately 6:20pm, the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the 46000 block of Camrose Avenue. Approximately 10 Firefighters from Hall 1 responded to the scene and discovered light grey smoke venting from a single-family detached home. This fire had the potential to cause serious damage to the home, however the resident acted quickly and extinguished the fire with a portable fire extinguisher before the arrival of fire crews. Fire crews confirmed that the fire was extinguished and assisted with ventilating the smoke from the home.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported and all occupants were able to safely exit their homes. This fire is accidental in nature.

The Chilliwack Fire Department would like to remind the public that 30% of structure fires in Canada are related to cooking at home. Please ensure that stoves and other cooking appliances are not left unattended.

The Chilliwack Fire Department strongly suggests that all homes have at least one multi-purpose (rated for class A, B, and C fires) dry chemical fire extinguisher installed and that residents are familiar with how to operate a fire extinguisher.
