Fatal Apartment Fire

On July 29, 2021 at approximately 0120 hours the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to multiple reports of an apartment complex fire in the 9200 block of Hazel St.

50 firefighters responded from Halls 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, upon arrival fire crews encountered heavy fire and black smoke venting through the roof of two apartments at the rear of the structure, and multiple occupants trapped on their balconies.

Fire crews quickly deployed ground ladders to rescue the trapped occupants, secured a water supply and deployed hose lines to set up a defensive attack on the fire. The building sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage resulting in structural instability. A reception centre was set up to accommodate displaced occupants. The fire was contained to the building of origin.

While the quick actions of the fire crews saved multiples lives, it saddens us to report that one occupant suffered fatal injuries due to the fire. Two firefighters suffered minor smoke inhalation and were assessed and released by BCEHS paramedics at the scene.

Chilliwack Fire Dept. wants to remind the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms.

The fire is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department.
