Pretty soon, the Abbotsford Police Department might be employing an actual Robocop…..

OK, well maybe that’s a bit extreme, but technology based policing is something they’re very interested in. A new bit of tech called “Star Chase” was introduced by Police Chief Bob Rich on Wednesday. Basically, the police cars will be able to position themselves behind a stolen vehicle and shoot a sticky dart that will allow them to track the stolen car with GPS as opposed to starting a dangerous police chase. Cbl. Ian Macdonald says it’s used in the US, but would be a first for Canada.

“As you can imagine, when there is a hot technology on the market, whether it’s in the policing realm or otherwise, people are going to want it.  So we are very aggressively trying to be the first police department in Canada to use this technology.  We believe we’re first in line and we hope to hold our place there.  With the assistance of the Abbotsford Police Foundation we hope to soon be outfitting our cars with them.”

He says each vehicle will cost $5000 to outfit with star chase, and it wouldn’t be possible without funding raised by the Abby Police Foundation.
