Coin

Belgium has unveiled a commemorative coin much to the chagrin of France.

If you’re a fan of worldwide mints then you might have already heard of this story back in March but if you’re not then welcome to an exciting country shenanigans. The 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo is approaching and Belgium wanted to create a commemorative €2 coin. However since it’s a common used currency across the continent – France objected which meant 180,00 minted coins were wasted. It was back to the drawing board for Belgium who found a little used law which allowed them to create a €2.50 and issue 70,000 which France could do nothing about. Now the coin can only be used in Belgium but they managed to make them nonetheless! Read more about it here from the NY Times.
