The former president of Trader Joe’s is starting a new store that he hopes will branch out – but this isn’t your normal grocery store.

The new store is called “The Daily Table”. A fairly apt name considering the gimmick with these stores is that the items are close to their expiration date. The store will be selling only surplus and aging foods. Doug Rauch says he founded the nonprofit venture because he was frustrated by how much food winds up in dumpsters just because it was nearing or at its expiration date. The deals on hand yesterday included bananas for 29 cents a pound, potatoes for 49 cents a pound and a dozen eggs for 99 cents. The Daily Table will also sell prepared foods and to-go meals. If the store is successful, Rauch hopes to open more locations nationwide. You can read more here from NPR.

How liberal are you with your expiration dates? Are there specific items you push past the date?
