KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAChilliwack council dealt with a few interesting issues at Tuesday’s meeting.
They approved a resolution that will go to the UBCM convention this fall, which calls on the province to come down harder on prolific offenders. It’s believed a small group of people are responsible for a good chunk of the crime in the community, and the current sentences for these offenders aren’t long enough.

Council also approved a plan to completely overhaul Spadina Ave between Corbould and Ashwell…that’s the area beside the Landing Sports Centre. They want to add greenspace and pedestrian walkways and restructure the parking on that road. It’s a $2.8 million project that will be done in 2017. Council said yes, but asked that staff change the layout a bit to facilitate some dedicated bike lanes.

Council also approved a plan to apply for a $225,000 federal grant that will go towards renovating and expanding the Landing Leisure Centre Spray Park.

And council also agreed to waive over $140,000 in development cost charges so that the Bethesda Christian Association can move ahead with a townhouse development on Vedder Rd that will house adults with disabilities.
